Frequently Asked Questions about the Funding Quest startup coaching group, answered by Bryan Brewer.
Q. What is the curriculum for the group?
A. We don’t follow a prescribed curriculum or linear course of study. The general topics covered in the group include the following:
- The angel funding process
- How to connect with angel investors
- Documents needed to seek angel funding
- Business plan basics
- Financial projections
- Executive team building
- Board of advisors
- Working with a corporate attorney
- How to prepare and present an investor pitch
- Valuation and other deal terms
- And more …
The topics covered at each meeting are based on the currently expressed needs and interests of the group members.
Q. What is the format for the meetings?
A. Each meeting lasts about 2 hours 30 minutes, with a short break in the middle. We usually sit around a conference table (as opposed to a classroom arrangement) and I lead the discussions. Much of the time is spent exploring specific questions from members. Other activities may include practicing your pitch in front of the group, giving and receiving feedback among group members, or interacting with a guest speaker. (Occasionally I invite a successful entrepreneur or angel investor to tell their stories and answer questions for part of a meeting.)
Q. Who would benefit from participation in the group?
A. CEOs of startup or early stage companies that are seeking angel funding. The group is appropriate for companies at any stage of the angel funding process.
Q. Is there a long term commitment?
A. No. Membership in the group is on a month-to-month basis. Members pay the monthly fee at the beginning of each month to secure their place in the group for that month.
Q. May I join a Funding Quest group in the middle of the month?
A. Yes, provided that there is space available. You pay half of the monthly fee, and then continue on a monthly payment basis at the beginning of the next month.
Q. If I drop out of the group, can I rejoin later?
A. Yes, you are welcome to rejoin at a later date, provided that there is space available. Each group is strictly limited to 10 participants.
Q. What if a group is full?
A. You’re welcome to put your name on a waiting list to join a group when an opening becomes available. New openings are filled on a first come, first served basis.
Q. What methods of payment do you accept for Funding Quest?
A. Cash, check, money order, or electronic payment via PayPal, which accepts VISA, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. (See mailing address below.)
Q. When is payment due?
A. Payment is due at the beginning of each month. In order to hold your place in the group for the upcoming month, I must receive your payment by the first of that month. (See mailing address below.)
Q. If I miss a meeting, can I get a partial refund?
A. No. Your monthly payment reserves your space in the group for both meetings that month. If you miss a meeting, there are no refunds.
Q. Can I attend a meeting via telephone?
A. Yes. We currently have speakerphone access to our coaching meetings for current members.
Q. Is there any guarantee that my business will receive angel funding as a result of my participation in a Funding Quest group?
A. No. The group offers education, guidance, and connections, but makes no guarantee about either the success of your business or your success in raising angel funding.
Q. Where do I send payment?
A. Mail check or money order payable to:
